Degan Media have been working together for over a year now on live regatta coverage from NYYC Race Week to Big Boat Series. Dan Egan, owner/operator, hired me to go down to Charleston to be the Producer and manage all the social media for the 2017 College Sailing Nationals in Charleston.

For me, it was like surreal to be back in the world of college sailing. I actually competed in Nationals the last time Charleston hosted in 2006 when sailing for Hobart and William Smith.

We streamed live on Facebook and Livestream from onboard the USS Yorktown, a floating War Memorial and Museum, docked next to the venue for 6 days. Producing included managing a staff of 3 cameramen, 2 commentators, 2 editors, and 2 interns while directing the shots between cameras, plugging the sponsors, and keeping the commentators with the information the needed.

The highlight of the project for me occurred during a wind delay. While the Live Production is thrilling, we learned during the pause in live coverage there was a 97-year-old vet who served on the USS Yorktown at the end of WWII. I grabbed a mic and cameraman and did an interview on the fly. This was a honor:

USS Yorktown

Thank you to the USS Yorktown Association for hosting our sailors, spectators, and media team. We had the HONOR of meeting Bill Walkinson, 95-year-old, retired Pilot who served on the Yorktown during WWII.
